HEY, OLD TIMER!
Remember the St. Louis Browns, that played in the old Sportsman’s Park? Well, the team recently had a reunion at the Missouri Athletic Club. More than 80 fans showed up to hear from the ball players: Ned Garver, Ed Mickelson, Roy Sievers, Bill Jennings, J.W. Porter and Bud Thomas. The team was formed in 1902 and the final game was in 1953. Mike Veeck, son of the late Bill Veeck, who bought the struggling American League team in 1951, gave an insight into a family totally dedicated to baseball. Mike is now part owner of six minor league teams. A great deal of the banter focused on Bill Veeck’s showmanship – when he signed the ageless Satchel Paige and hired Eddie Gaedel – a three-foot, seven-inches-tall player. similar efforts.
BACK IN TOWN
Herbie’s on Euclid Avenue threw off a wow $4 million in revenue last year, confided bon vivant Aaron Teitelbaum, who is creating an empire of restaurants, beginning with the former Balaban’s and Monarch in Maplewood. “Next, will be a space in Clayton with 80 seats,” he said. Teitelbaum also tipped that he and Joanna Dettmann, founder of the search engine optimization firm Tsunela, just celebrated their one-year anniversary of bliss. Across the street, on Maryland Avenue, entrepreneur Rex Sinquefield has bought the building at 4652, where it’s
rumored to become an art gallery and a generous

space for the World Chess Hall of Fame and Museum. A perfect fit for Rex, who owns the St. Louis Chess Club and Scholastic Center. While sipping coffee, he chatted about how he grew up at St. Vincent’s Orphanage and went on to become successful in co-founding Dimensional Fund Advisors and a think-tank with Crosby Kemper, III,. He said, “Our biggest issue is replacing the city earnings tax and the Missouri sales tax.” But, chess was uppermost in Rex’s mind, when he enthused the U.S. Championship will be held here in late April. He extolled the advantages of chess and how it contributes to mental activity – memorizing, planning and patience. Turning to world issues, Sinquefield opined, ” Iran will get a nuke unless Israel takes out the installations. They have no choice. I don’t see Obama standing up against them.” A graduate of St. Louis University and the University of Chicago, Singuefield joshed, “I told my youngest son, Luke, if you don’t finish college, you’ll become a failure like Bill Gates, Rush Limbaugh and Bobby Fisher.”
DATELINE – ST. CHARLES, MO.
Seeking the city that was and is, I walked around St. Charles this week. Mentally ticking off the highlights of the city, I found that money is tight, but somebody is hanging loose. There are walking banks – Jerry Scheidegger, Peter Bezemes, Paul Niedner, Elizabeth Rauch and Harlan Powell. There’s Tuners and Quintessential – two hot playpens “with a South Beach feel,” said Carol Felzien, a
supressagent with the city’s convention and visitors bureau, who lives in O’Fallon. A temporary ice skating rink will open in Frontier Park on Black Friday. “We’re no longer on the end of the Pony Express, informed Felzien, who boasted that Mayor Patti York stole the Missouri Municipal League convention from St. Louis.
And what a fine convention center the city has. St. Louis built one, so why? Donna Hafer owns the
revered Mother-In-Law Restaurant, where ghosts “have special privileges,” pointed out Hafer – even at the upcoming dinner, tagged “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Hohafer is a glamorous 74 year-old, who confessed she still works two shifts a day; washing the curtains and cleaning the 1866 building after hours. Her fiancee, 80 year-old Dave Thompson, enjoyed reminiscing over his many years as head engineer on the F-15 at McDonnell-Douglas. He recalled, “When an F-15 took off, J..S. McDonnell used to say, “Hear that? It’s the sound of freedom.” Frozen in time is the intruding Auto Zone sign on the fringes of Lindenwood University’s campus. But not so frozen is Lindenwood, which has recently completed or in the processs of building dorm structures, a rec center, an arts center and a new house for its president, the charming Jim Evans and his wife Lois. Just
minor complaints from students: “We have to take philosophy and religion courses and I need more education courses,” said Ashley Donaldson of Wentzville. Kim Jordan of Independence lamented, “There’s no wireless in the dorms.” Wireless aside, the futuristic Evans has long-range plans such as offering courses as a master’s degree in social work and a doctorate in business administration. Oddly enough, the school offers a four-year degree in fire science. “We have 3,800 residential students and 1,200 commuters,” said Evans. “Enrollment is up 10 percent over last year.” A former psychology professor, who has been with the university for 38 years, Evans admitted, “We’re looking for more professors in all areas. We like to keep class sizes as small as possible” He proudly boasted that the schools’ employees get salary raises each year. And, as fall ripples into winter and soon there went 2009. Still, no pennant for St. Louis, no Stupid Bowl and a shot at the Stanley Cup? Ah, but the St. Charles Rascals ball team continued to notch up an enviable record

BOB’S YOUR UNCLE
St. Louis mayor Francis Slay raised more than a few eyebrows by posing the following question in his blog: Why do the region’s transportation agency and transportation planning agency have different buildings and duplicated staffs? Slay goes on to suggest that now might be the time (and Metro’s prez Bob Baer might be the person) to combine the leadership of Metro and East-West Gateway Coordinating Council.
NEWS IS NEWS
KSDK (Channel 5) anchor/producer Art Holliday is known around the dial for his affable good nature. But (as Congressional candidate Ed Martin might say) , even Atlas has to shrug. Holliday was missing from the station’s downtown studio Thursday, sent out by his bosses to cool down following a newsroom tirade earlier in the week. Holliday was loudly upset after the station aired a story about a memorial service for St. Louis police officer Julius Moore. According to Channel 5′s story, the young officer and father of three was shot and killed. According to every other news outlet (and the Police Department), he died of injuries sustained in an auto accident en route to assist a fellow Third District officer. The columnist commends Holliday for his outrage.

Former Ram and hometowner Aeneas Williams and St. Louis Public Schools supe Kelvin Adams are in a confab with Police Chief Dan Isom to create a Stop the Violence coalition… Heading for the Guinness Book of Records nominations is Christian gospel singer/composer KBN (Kevin Burroughs) for a double nomination at the Stellar Awards. He has just recoded two albums… Jazz chantoosie Denise Thimes wowed the crowd to tears at Rex Sinquefield‘s Chess Club… The good times are rolling at Hackett Security, where
bossman Mike Hackett revealed the firm has bought the Cape Girardeau, Mo.,-based Securtech. “We’re also doing a new technology in video monitoring for shopping centers and the government,” said Hackett… Out in Scottsdale, attorney and expatriate Tom Hullverson shot a 74 at golf – his age… That was GOP heavy-hitter Jack Oliver with his tots at the Woman’s Exchange on Saturday… Just why does the fragrance of homemade pastrami waft on one floor at St. Mary’s Health Center? Must have been brought by nurse Rachel Protzel, whose hub is Max Protzel, at the family’s deli in Clayton… Local 4 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is fawning over locally-produced television news programs. The billboard on I-44 at Southwest avenue embraces the shows with a “Turn On” campaign… Supporters of Demo St. Louis county exec Charlie Dooley are exuding new confidence in the likeable Dooley’s reelection chances next year following last Thursday’s public disclosure that Republican challenger William Corrigan has raised an anemic $105K in the past reporting quarter, leaving him $319K on hand to contest a well-funded ($315K raised, $714K on hand) incumbent among the state’s largest block of Demo voters. Prudent pundits, though, will certainly continue to monitor the race… The Metropolitan Parks & Recreation District is the latest local political entity to retain or consult experts to try to chart its course and reshape its profile. MPRD has tapped the services of Toky Branding & Design, Metro, the Arch, the East-West Gateway, and MSD are currently engaged in similar efforts.
FLOTSOME AND JETSOME
Barbara Taylor’s 60th birthday was fittingly observed Saturday night at the
uppity Bogey Club, tossed by her husband, Andy “Enterprise” Taylor. The flora was a day in the making at Ken Meisner’s antique and flower shop at Plaza Frontenac, where he’s observing 35 years in the mall. Andy’s dad, Jack, was expected to make a wedding announcement for his and Barbara Bryant’s nupts (our invitation got lost). Sodden thought: Jack Taylor‘s fortune is down $7 billion, according to Forbes magazine. The rental-car tycoon’s Enterprise Rent-A-Car “is surviving by dealing with insurance claims instead of focusing operations at troublesome airports,” sez Forbes…. Social media guru Dianne Benanti has ankled Smoke-Free St. Louis… Berger, Berger and – Berger? First, there’s Napoli2′s chef John Berger, whose pop is Jerry Berger. Berger whips up the meanest pancetta-wrapped langoustines in spicy limoncello. Then, there’s
Mindy Sciales, daughter of Jerry “Laclede Town” Berger, who orchestrates the servings of rustic, coastal Italian cuisine at her Mazara Restaurant in Clayton. And, finally, this wretched paragrapher… There’ll always be a pitchman! For openers, there’s Edward Jones, the company that fills the counter with its propaganda at the aptly named Edward Jones YMCA. And, the Stange Law Firm, that headlines its “informational seminars for men who are fathers, but who are not married to their children’s mothers. The event is also targeted to men, who are unmarried fathers-to-be.” Next stop on Thursday at Haftrak’s Sports Bar in St. Chaz.
MEANWHILE
Students working on The University News at SLU have not been paid for about two months. The students earn commission from ad sales. (“Like a parking space, the meter’s running out,” said one observer.) Perhaps SLU’s budget is too strained. I mean a letter was shot out to faculty the other day about changes in “many cost-saving measures and achieved significant reductions in our operating expenses.” The gobbledygook was written over the name of interim provost (the provost was canned) Manoj Patankar. He penned, “In order for us to build graduate and research programs across all colleges and schools, we believe it is imperative that the administration of the graduate programs be completely decentralized by distributing all graduate programs from the Graduate School to the respective colleges and schools and the deans of the respective colleges and schools, be empowered to build their graduate programs.” Also, at SLU’s Parks College, “an innovative urban windmill is being designed and developed… to generate electricity on campus as early as March, 2010,” reports The University News… .If the cure for any of mankind’s ills emerges from WashU, the columnist bets that it will come from the creative laboratory of Dr. Barbara Schaal, the Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor of Biology. One hint of that creativity is the fact that her grad students are required to describe their work on the lab’s website in haiku. A sample: /Aethionema/one-half of base mustard split/now to find out more.
