KIT BOND SAYS “DON’T COUNT OUT PAUL RYAN”
CLAYTON’S CROWNE PLAZA TO BUILD 18-STORY ANNEX
PONZI SCHEMER JOSHUA GOULD’S ANTICS
Playing it safe in his parked Chevy, former U.S. Senator Kit Bond made all his morning’s cell phone calls Thursday in front of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, where he was to deliver a speech on infrastructure and transportation. He was well qualified having served on the subcommittee on transportation, housing and urban development. After he jumped out of the car, Bond provided some nuggets for the columnist on:
- HIS PREDICTION OF GOP PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES: “Mitch Daniels and (former Minnesota Gov.) Tim Pawlenty may be leaders, but don’t count out Paul Ryan.“
- LINDA BOND: “My wife is assisting Nancy Reagan with the Ronald Reagan Centennial Celebration and she’s engineered celebrations in Krakow, Budapest, Prague and in London.” {Linda has served as consultant to the National Republican Senatorial Committee.)
- DOMINIQUE STRAUSS-KAHN SCANDAL: “Unfortunately, it will have many repercussions.”
- FAMILY: “I’m now the proud grandfather of Elizabeth Ivy Bond, who was born in February. My son, Sam, is now working for Baine Associates in Atlanta.”
Bond spoke before 100 members of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, who deal in all aspects of supply, transportation, bill paying and logistics.
The St. Louis Chapter is helmed by Tom Krenning and the event was organized by Neal Breitweiser.
SEN. KIT BOND TAKES SHOT AT MEDIA
The typical marriage story. They started out to be good friends, but later they changed their minds. That would be Baltimore’s Patty and Bob Quicksilver, who have decided to call it quits. Both, former St. Louisans, he once owned a chain of six candy stores – underwritten by Patty’s dad, the late Sid Rich,. to the tune of $600,000 – which bellied up. . .Addressing the recent leak of Pentagon information, Sen. Kit Bond said on network teevee:: “We’re not counting on good journalistic judgement”. . .Director of social media (IT) Kurt Greenbaum has ankled the Post-Dispatch for a berth at patch.com. . .T.J. Birkenmeier is circulating the latest from UntaxMeNow, that reads: “Nothing impairs wealth accumulation (a.k.a. freedom) more than taxes. That’s why taxes are referred to as “redistribution of wealth”. . .Caught up with former St. Louis Symph chief (1966-1972) David Hyslop, who has since married Sally Fefercorn in Minneapolis, where he operates a consulting shop. Hyslop remains in touch with former symph maestro Lenny Slatkin, who commutes between Detroit and Lyon, France (some combination). And, Hyslop confides he surfed on the ‘net to find baggy pants burlesque comic Billy “Zoot” Reed, who held forth, between strippers, at the old Grand Theatre. “I was not in the concert hall all of the time,” he admitted.
JIM BUFORD ON ISRAEL & THE POLS
With his wife, Susan, close at hand in the ballroom of the Sheraton Westport, Urban League chief Jim Buford
exuded over his recent trip to Israel when he opined, “Israel needs to exist and there are 22 Arab countries that are determined not to allow it to do so.” Turning to the immigration bill, he said that he is opposed to it, because it’s profiling and “we shouldn’t judge how people appear. And, besides, the national Urban League office is also in opposition to it.” Buford, the $220,000 a-year president and CEO of the St. Louis league, confided he was a Republican, while working for former Gov. Kit Bond in the 1980s, but has since switched to become a stalwart Democrat. “I once worked with President Obama, since the league also covers St. Clair (Illinois), and I feel he’s making a change and people don’t like change,” he said. Buford has raised the current budget to $20 million from $1.75 million when he was appointed to his post 25 years ago.
Seen here ‘n there were: civil rights lawyer, the 93 year-old beloved Frankie M. Freeman with her daughter and son-in-law, Shelbe and Ellis Bullock; Bryan Thomas, president of the Urban League Professionals; mistress of ceremonies Darlynn Bosley, wife of former mayor Freeman Bosley, Jr,; Rebecca M. Barnes, guild president; Brenda Clayton-Davis, brunch chairwoman.
Musical chores before and during the brunch were capably handled by “Lady Jazz” Mae Wheeler, the Hazelwood High Jazz ensemble and The Jazz Edge group.
CARDINALS CROWD CRUNCHER
In our town, the home opener is taken with commendable seriousness in an annual exercise in which everybody gets into the act. And so, it was endlessly fascinating on Monday. If there had been a Michelin Guide for our town (“worth a special journey”) it would have been to watch the Cardinals’ dynamics as well as the spectators…Richard Mark, senior veep at Ameren UE, offered an update on the company’s Karen Foss. “She’s had health issues and all her money was taken by her ex-husband,” said Mark. Angie Detmers, a former staffer with The Lakin Law Firm, recalled her visit a few weeks ago with her friend, Tom Lakin, in the federal prison in Forest City, Ark. “He looks wonderful and works out constantly,” she noted. “He’ll be out in two years.” Helming the Cardinals’ exec offices for 25 years, the affable Agnes “Aggie” Ceriotti, recalled one of Jack Buck‘s last visits with her. “He leaned over my desk, shaking with tremors, and joked, ‘This desk is shaking – get a different one.” When Buck learned that Aggie’s grandson, Robbie, was stricken with arthrogriposis (born with the lack of muscles in his arms and legs), Aggie said that Buck knelt down and cried. Dobbs Tire and Autos Centers’ chief David Dobbs bemoaned the skyrocketing costs of tires. He said that most car dealers buy some from his firm. “The tsunami knocked out 40 percent of the rubber needed,” said Dobbs. “After all, they’re made from rubber, steel and oil. While auto sales are up, some people are keeping their cars for an average of 12 years.” Meanwhile, Dobbs has 38 company-owned shops in Illinois and Missouri and the company is now focusing on further openings in Columbia and Crystal City/Festus. The firm’s initial outing was the purchase of a Goodyear store in Webster Groves. “They (the Cardinals) look good on paper; let’s see what they do on the field,” said young Bill DeWitt, before the game began. He accompanied his sis, Katy DeWitt Kern. With a great timber to his voice, Dan Shannon, Mike’s heir, was asked why he wasn’t interested in broadcasting. “They could have only one son doing it,” he joshed. Dan’s mom, Pat, was on hand, along with Mike Shannon’s Steaks and Seafood’s GM Matt Kruszynski, who pointed out,”We’re now serving organic, grass-fed beef.” Here ‘n there were: Cele and Mike Pulitzer, who gestured he keeps busy in the gym at their home in Santa Barbara. KTRS Radio’s Tim Dorsey was asked if his station is negotiating for a new contract to continue Cardinal broadcasts. He winked and said, “If we don’t get it, I’ll buy you lunch at Beffa’s.” Nearby were ESPN Radio’s Randy Karaker, stunning Brook Wallace, Brenda and Chuck Hatfield and Linda and Sen. Kit Bond, who proudly mentioned that his son, Sam, is now studying for his MBA. Barrister Castor J. Armesto, who handles mergers and acquisitions for the Stinson Morrison Hecker firm, beamed and said that this year’s business is up substantially over 2009. The pride of the St. Louis Police Dept., detective Tom Carroll, chased out the first unruly drunk from the stadium before the game began. (The dude probably filled up with 16-ounce, to-go containers of beer at the neighboring Hilton Hotel for only $5 bucks each, compared to the ballpark’s $8.) Earlier, detective Carroll told the columnist, “I have all your books at home and read every one of them.” (Hello?)
